Be honest, how often do you clean your mat? I try to wash mine before or after each practice. After an at home practice my mat is normally covered with glitter, thanks to my girls.
I opt for this DIY Mat Cleaner recipe for many reasons. 1) It does not contain any harsh or toxic chemicals 2) It is safe to use while pregnant 3) Easy and Simple to Make.
Tea tree oil and witch hazel both have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, which make them a great chemical-free addition to yoga mat cleaner. You can substitue the essential oils for any other ones if you prefer.
It is important to use a glass spray bottle since the essential oils can break down a plastic bottle. I also opt to use a small 4oz bottle to keep in my gym bag.
Add all ingredients to the spay bottle and shake. If you desire transfer some to the smaller bottle.
- 1 3/4 cup filtered water
- 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral)
- 1/4 cup witch hazel (astringent)
- 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil (anti-Fungal)
- 5 drops lavender essential oil (antibacterial & anti-fungal)
To use spray on your mat and wipe down with cloth towel.
Always test a small spot of your mat since not all mats are created equal.
